Discord Among Brethren Over Bible Translations

Bible TranslationsLet’s be clear, I am NOT of the mindset that it’s ALL or nothing in that you can only use THIS or THAT version of the BIBLE or else you are somehow NOT a Christian. That is a pretty unedifying harsh statement by any stretch. Unfortunately to my dismay I hear this quite often where one brethren over another suggests their Bible translation is the ONLY one to be trusted as being the actual uncompromised Word of God. In so much that one attacks the other in calling them a heretic, should they lean to a different version of the Bible entirely.

On a more personal level, I tend to go back and forth between the KJV, NASB and the ESV. Most often times simply for clarification purposes. I also own a NIV but it’s probably my least favorite in that it is paraphrased.

However I tend to turn to the KJV more often over others. To be honest it sounds more reverent with all the “thee, thou, and ye” references but let’s be clear, Jesus Christ did not speak in formal High English when he walked among us here on earth. Neither did His apostles. The original manuscripts were penned in Greek and Hebrew text by men who were inspired by God. Compiling those manuscripts into the Bible we have today has definitely gone through a number of interpretations. Some probably better than others.

In saying that I do think there are a few differences we can find between ANY Bible version. And in essence even some discrepencies within the various interpretations done AFTER the fact.

Yet in spite of all of this I DO believe our sovereign GOD is perfectly capable of getting His message out in ALL of these various translations, even if NOT perfectly penned the same as another. The point IS, whenever we DO get into His Word with WHATEVER biblical translation we prefer, we are to PRAY for understanding in asking the Holy Spirit to LEAD US to the Truth in all things. But our FAITH isn’t based on whether we prefer to use ONLY a KJV Bible and we certainly shouldn’t single others out for using a different bible translation in somehow labeling them heretics. This is far from edifying others as called for in Holy Scripture.

That being said I’m well aware of the numerous differences that exist between translations and to be honest some of those interpretations are quite troubling. We certainly have to be like the Bereans in testing everything we read to be true. Acts 17:11 And many times that requires us to do a word study of the original Hebrew and Greek text. But yet I still don’t think it should cause dissension between brethren. I am grieved when I hear it does. It’s one thing to point out error but another to hate a brethren or label them a heretic simply for their preference in using another version of the Bible.

I hope you will consider for a moment the following passages of Scripture in your study today that address this issue from a biblical perspective. One I hope everyone will take to heart.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJV)
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

Ephesians 4:29(KJV)
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Colossians 4:6 (KJV)
Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Matthew 7:2 (KJV)
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Proverbs 25:18 (KJV)
18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

Proverbs 6:16-19 (KJV)
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A FALSE WITNESS that speaketh lies, and he that soweth DISCORD among brethren.
